Mechanical sealing systems
A mechanical seal is a device that helps join systems or mechanisms together by preventing leakage (e.g., in a pumping system), containing pressure, or excluding contamination. Some of the types of mechanical seals available include Gaskets, O-rings, Bellow seals, Cartridge seals, Labyrinth seals, Radial shaft seals, and Axial shaft seals. A stationary seal may also be referred to as 'packing’.
A gasket is a mechanical seal that can be made from a variety of materials such as metal, cork, plastic, foam, paper, rubber, felt, neoprene, fiberglass, nitrile, silicone, polytetraflouroethylene (also known as PTFE or Teflon) and other composite substances. A gasket sheet is a large piece of sheeting intended to be used in making quick, cost-effective gaskets (seals), for joining surfaces or components together.
